Were dinosaurs intelligent?

For most of the 20th century, dinosaurs were portrayed as slow and not particularly intelligent reptiles. This image began to change when paleontologists discovered that many of them were far more active than previously thought. Some hunted in ways that required rapid decision-making, others cared for their offspring, and many species moved more efficiently than older reconstructions had suggested. Yet one of the most difficult questions remains: were they intelligent? The problem is that dinosaur brains have not survived to the present day. Scientists must reconstruct their size and shape based on the interior of fossilized skulls and compare them with the brains of modern birds and crocodiles – the closest living relatives of dinosaurs.

In 2023, a study attracted considerable attention by suggesting that Tyrannosaurus rex may have had a number of neurons comparable to some primates. The researchers estimated this based on brain size and comparisons with birds. The hypothesis was very bold and quickly spread through the media. However, only a few months later, many paleontologists and neuroscientists published detailed analyses showing that such conclusions went too far. They pointed out that we do not know whether the metabolism and brain organization of Tyrannosaurus actually resembled those of modern birds. As a result, most specialists concluded that estimates of neuron numbers alone are not enough to claim that T. rex possessed intelligence comparable to that of primates. This scientific debate is a good example of how modern science works – bold hypotheses are published and then carefully tested by other researchers.

This does not mean, however, that dinosaurs were unintelligent. A great deal of evidence suggests that some of them had highly developed senses, were capable hunters, could recognize members of their own species, and in some cases cared for nests and young. Particularly interesting are the small dinosaurs belonging to the maniraptoran group, from which modern birds evolved. Today, crows, parrots and jays are among the most intelligent animals on Earth. This means that at least some cognitive abilities may have very deep evolutionary roots. We still do not know exactly when they appeared or what they were like in their extinct relatives.

Paleontology increasingly makes use of CT scanning, 3D models and comparative analyses, which allow researchers to reconstruct not only bones but also the inside of the skull and the paths of nerves. This makes it possible to better assess how developed the vision, hearing or sense of balance of individual species may have been. However, there is still a limit that cannot be crossed. Fossils cannot reveal the memories, thought processes or level of consciousness of an animal that lived 70 million years ago. This is why scientists formulate their conclusions very cautiously.

The most honest answer, therefore, is that some dinosaurs were probably far more intelligent than scientists believed only a few decades ago, but we have no evidence that their intelligence matched that of primates. Every new discovery, however, shows that the world of dinosaurs was far more complex than old textbooks suggested. And because modern birds are living dinosaurs, it is possible that some of the remarkable abilities we admire today in crows or parrots had their beginnings in that distant era.
